The Role

This unique role is the only Financial Counsellor role embedded within a domestic and family violence service within Queensland. The role helps alleviate financial stress for women and children during critical times, enabling immediate access to financial support. The program is essential to help women recover after crisis and reduce the likelihood of returning to violent relationships due to financial stress.

The role involves one on one advocacy, referrals to legal support pathways, assistance with debt alleviation and systemic advocacy.

The role sits within a specialist domestic and family violence service that supports women, children, and families across the Brisbane metropolitan region. Services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team through flexible outreach and mobile models, ensuring support is accessible, safe, and responsive to individual circumstances.

The service takes an inclusive and culturally responsive approach, recognising diverse relationships, family structures, and lived experiences.

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Specialist DFV Financial Counsellor to provide financial counselling, advocacy, and economic empowerment support to women experiencing financial hardship and economic abuse as a result of domestic and family violence.

This role supports victim-survivors to navigate complex financial systems, address debt, stabilise their financial circumstances, and understand their financial and legal rights. The position also contributes to systemic advocacy aimed at improving financial systems and responses to economic abuse.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Provide individual financial counselling and budgeting support to women impacted by DFV.
  • Advocate with financial institutions, creditors, and government bodies on behalf of participants.
  • Negotiate payment plans and debt relief arrangements.
  • Support women to understand their financial rights, including referrals to legal services where required.
  • Assist with matters related to debts, fines, rent, mortgages, credit cards, utilities, taxation, child support, and property settlement.
  • Contribute to systemic advocacy and policy reform related to financial abuse and hardship.

Role Requirements

  • This position can only be filled by a woman, in accordance with the Anti-Discrimination Act (sex-based exemptions for work with women experiencing DFV).
  • Current accredited membership with a recognised Financial Counselling Association.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of household financial management and budgeting strategies.
  • Experience working within financial counselling, credit, debt management, or related sectors.
  • Strong understanding of relevant laws and regulations, including fines and infringement processes.
  • Knowledge of external dispute resolution bodies and advocacy pathways.
  • A trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to working with women experiencing DFV.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • SCHADS Level 6: $110,110.00 – $114,980.32 p.a. + 12% Super
  • Salary packaging available to increase your take home pay
  • Full time fixed term role until December 2026 with extension dependent on funding
  • Monday to Friday, flexible hours between 8am – 5pm
